KVM-based root server

With our root servers, we offer high-performance vServers based on KVM with guaranteed RAM and CPU resources. Thanks to KVM , our root servers offer almost all the functions of a dedicated server.

Additional features such as the ability to create snapshots or maintain the vServer remotely via VNC console open up a wide range of use cases. Thanks to the general use of branded hardware, redundant uplinks and a redundant power supply, our vServers offer optimum availability for professional use.

Decide for yourself which operating system and management system you want to use on your vServer. You can customize all server services and install software yourself via SSH and the web VNC console. You can start, stop, reboot and import images with our admin panel SCP (Server Control Panel) software. The SCP also provides you with extensive traffic statistics , the option of inserting a CD-ROM or DVD and creating snapshots of the vServer’s hard disks. The SCP makes managing a vServer particularly easy.

Dedicated server vs. root server

A dedicated server is a separate piece of hardware that is exclusively available to you for your applications. A root server is operated on a host system alongside other virtual machines. However, this does not mean that no dedicated resources are available to you: Rather, the root server combines the advantages of a dedicated server with those of a virtualized system.

With both systems, you have full root access to the server’s operating system. This means that you have the highest level of administrative control. These servers are particularly suitable for experienced admins with extensive Linux knowledge who want to customize the operating system and system configuration according to their own ideas.

With a dedicated server, the performance of the system is available to you at all times without restrictions. With our root servers, we also guarantee this for the CPU cores booked and the RAM provided.

A virtualized system, on the other hand, offers you functions that are often not available with dedicated servers, or are only available in a roundabout way: You can conveniently create snapshots, for example, before making major configuration adjustments. The system is conveniently controlled via a web interface (Server Control Panel), which you can use to install images, insert CDs or DVDs and which also includes a web VNC console.

If you appreciate the advantages of both dedicated servers and virtualized servers, a root server is the best choice. For ARM64 workloads, we recommend our ARM servers.

Advantages of our root server offers

Our root servers combine the advantages of virtual and dedicated servers. Despite virtualization, the root servers offer you guaranteed AMD EPYC™ 9645 2 CPU cores and fast DDR5 RAM.
You can access the hard disks via fast hardware RAID on SSD hard disks. They areeasy to manage. For example, you can create snapshots, import and export images and much more. For AI/ML, rendering, or other GPU-enabled jobs, we recommend our vGPU servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A root server is a server where you have full administrative access (root access). You receive clearly defined resources that are available to your server. You can run individual system software and have complete administrative control. A root server therefore requires knowledge of the administration of server systems.

Root servers are ideal for store solutions, large websites, mobile app services or as email servers for companies and private individuals with larger projects. This allows you to operate with maximum flexibility, security and quality with maximum performance.

The terms “dedicated server” and “root server” are often used synonymously in the IT industry and represent similar concepts: With a dedicated server, you get exclusive access to a physical server. At netcup, VPS and root servers refer to virtualized servers with root access. While CPU performance cannot be guaranteed with a VPS, a root server combines the advantages of both dedicated and virtualized servers: A root server has guaranteed CPU performance, and thanks to virtualization, features like snapshot creation and management via a panel are possible, just like with a VPS.

You select the location of your root server at netcup directly on the product page before placing your order. The following locations are available:

  • Vienna (VIE)
  • Nuremberg (NUE)
  • Manassas, USA (MNZ)
  • Singapore (SIN)

In addition, there is the option “No preference Europe”. With this option, you cannot choose the exact location, but your server will be set up exclusively in a European data center (e.g. Vienna or Nuremberg), depending on available capacity.

Overall, using a root server provides the flexibility, performance and control required for demanding Internet applications and services.

  1. Complete control: As the operator of a root server, you have full control over the configuration, resource allocation, and security guidelines. This allows you to adapt the server environment to your specific requirements and react flexibly to changes.
  2. High performance: Root servers are often operated on high-performance hardware that enables fast data processing and transfer. This is particularly important for applications that have high computing power and bandwidth requirements, such as large databases, e-commerce websites, or multimedia streaming services.
  3. Customizability: With a root server, you can customize the operating system environment and software to your liking. This allows you to install and configure specific applications or services that are optimized for your requirements.
  4. Data protection and security: By managing your own root server, you can implement the security measures that meet your data protection and security requirements. You have control over access to the server and can implement measures such as firewalls, encryption, and regular security updates.
  5. Independence from third-party providers: With your own root server, you are not dependent on third-party providers to manage your Internet infrastructure. You have full control over your server environment and are not dependent on the guidelines or restrictions of other companies.
  6. Development freedom: For developers, a root server offers maximum freedom in the development and provision of applications. You can use different programming languages, frameworks and libraries and adapt the server environment as required to develop innovative solutions.

The Root Server Generation 12.5 relies on modern hardware and state-of-the-art technology. This makes these plans ideal for scenarios that require the highest performance and maximum stability.

No, unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade from an older generation to a newer one (e.g., G11 to G12). If necessary, you can order a new plan and migrate your data either manually or using a tool. You can find more information about migrating servers in the Help Center.

Depending on the availability of older hardware, we may continue to offer previous-generation root servers, for example, as part of promotions or on special occasions. Beyond that, only the most current plans are available for purchase.

However, if you already own a server, you can upgrade to a bigger plan of the same generation, depending on availability and plan options. For more information on upgrade options, see the Product Upgrade article in the Help Center.

Choose between a minimum contract term of one , twelve , or 24 months. The longer you commit, the cheaper it gets: With a 12-month contract, you’ll save money compared to the monthly billing option, and with a 24-month contract, you’ll save even more.

Yes, upgrades within the same product generation (e.g., from an RS 2000 G12.5 to RS 4000 G12.5) is possible and can easily be carried out in the Customer Control Panel (CCP). A switch between different generations (e.g., G11 to G12.5) or between different product types (e.g., VPS to Root Server) is not possible for technical and contractual reasons.

Please also note that an instance upgrade is only possible to larger plans or plans with longer minimum contract terms. You can find more information here.

Yes! With us, DDoS protection isn’t an add-on—it’s standard and always free.

It is very important to us that you are satisfied with our service. That’s why we offer a satisfaction guarantee: If you’re not satisfied with your root server, you can apply the satisfaction guarantee within the first 30 days of your order and get your money back.
