1. About GPG

GPG (GNU Privacy Guard) is an encryption tool that uses public-key cryptography to securely encrypt and sign data and communications.

Using the public key, you can send us encrypted messages and securely transfer and sign documents.

Due to technical limitations, we are currently only able to respond with unencrypted messages. In this case, the unencrypted reply will also contain your message in unencrypted form.

3. Encrypting Emails With GPG

Outlook

To encrypt your messages in Outlook, you’ll need an add-on. Note that the new version of Outlook currently does not support GpgOL and therefore does not support GPG.

For the classic version of Outlook, follow these steps:

Installing Add-On

  1. Download Gpg4win : https://www.gpg4win.de/ (external link).
  2. Install the software and make sure that the Outlook plugin GpgOL is also installed.
  3. Open the program Kleopatra (installed automatically).

Note that we have no influence over the development of external tools and assume no liability in this regard.

Creating a Key

  1. At the top right, click File > New OpenPGP Key Pair.
  2. Enter your name and email address.
  3. Select whether you want to protect the generated key with a passphrase.
  4. Click OK.
  5. If you checked the box in step 4, enter your desired passphrase now.
  6. The key will appear in the list.

Importing a Key

  1. Save the netcup GPG key mentioned above as an .asc file or to your clipboard.
  2. Click File > Import and select the .asc file. To copy the key from the clipboard, click Tools > Clipboard > Certificate Import.

Encrypting an Email

  1. Open Outlook and compose the email you want to send.
  2. A tab for GpgOL will appear in the menu bar.
  3. Click Encrypt to encrypt your message.

Thunderbird

Creating a Key

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Open the Settings.
  3. Click Account Settings.
  4. In the menu, click End-To-End Encryption > OpenPGP Key Manager.
  5. In the new window, click Generate > New Key Pair.
  6. Configure your settings and click Generate key and Confirm.
  7. Activate the key in your account under End-To-End Encryption > OpenPGP > Your Key.

Importing a Key

  1. Save the netcup GPG key mentioned above as an .asc file or to your clipboard.
  2. Go to End-To-End Encryption > OpenPGP Key Manager.
  3. Click File > Import Public Key(s) from File and select the .asc file. To copy the key from the clipboard, click Edit > Import Key(s) from Clipboard.
  4. Select Accepted and click Import.

Encrypting an Email

  1. Compose the email you want to send.
  2. Click Encrypt in the menu bar at the top.
  3. If the recipient’s key is stored correctly, your message is now encrypted.
